Royal Gourmet GD401 Portable Propane Gas Grill/Griddle Review

Royal Gourmet GD401 is a multi-functional gas grill/griddle combo with two cooking areas: 314 square inches of grill area and 292 square inches of griddle area. It’s equipped with 4 stainless steel burners with a total heat output of 48,000 BTU/hr output (12,000 BTU per burner).

Royal Gourmet GD401 gets plenty hot (sears steaks very well) and cooks great however because of open top design it does take a bit longer to cook than with grills that do have a lid.

Heat distribution is pretty good too. You can notice that there’s a bit less heat on sides but it’s not too bad and many will actually prefer this ‘’perceived’’ flaw.

All-in-all it works really well and the end results are delicious. Royal Gourmet GD401 is equipped with automatic ignition system that works flawlessly and the grill is compatible with 20 lb tanks (must be bought separately).

Features

Royal Gourmet GD401 has collapsible legs, caster wheels and grease management system with draw-out grease tray.

Other features include side tables (that unfortunately are not foldable) and hanging bar with hooks for your tools (they are located a little bit low to the ground so they are not the most convenient ones).

Quality

Overall quality of materials and construction is pretty good however with that being said Royal Gourmet GD401 is not quite as sturdy as a quality full sized grill.

Portability

Royal Gourmet GD401 is often marketed as a portable grill but calling it portable is a bit of a stretch. Assembled this thing weighs about 82.2 pounds and measures 66.1 inches by 21.7” inches by 36.6” inches (it does have collapsible/foldable legs so you can decrease the height for carrying).

With some determination it can be portable but it’s heavier and a lot larger than most ‘’portable’’ grills.

Other

Royal Gourmet GD401 doesn’t come with a cover but you should probably to buy it to protect from weather if you will leave it sitting outside/under sky. Royal Gourmet recommends their CR6008 cover for this model.

Some consumers reported their Royal Gourmet GD401 being damaged during shipping and arriving with some parts beings dented. This doesn’t happen in majority of cases but sometimes it does so it’s better for you to be aware of such possibility.

Verdict

Royal Gourmet GD401 grills great and is fairly well built too. As far as being a portable grill goes – if you are strong, both mentally and physically, then it just might be.
