Philips HD9650/96 Digital Twin TurboStar XXL is an air fryer with 3 pound basket capacity. If you have been looking at other air fryers you might be slightly confused as usually basket capacity is stated in quarts so to make thing simple Philips HD9650/96 XXL has basket capacity of 4 quarts.

Since Philips HD9650/96 XXL is more expensive than most air fryers is it also better?

Cooking

Philips HD9650/96 XXL air fryer cooks really good. It must be said that even relatively inexpensive air fryers often cook very well so there’s not much room for improvement, but Philips does seem to cook just a bit better. You can adjust temperature from 100°F to 400°F and cooking time from 1 to 60 minutes.

Everything you could cook in air fryer end up tasting delicious. Crispy on outside without losing any moisture inside. french fries, hamburgers, steaks, chicken, onion rings, fish, veggies and so much more taste amazing after being cooked in Philips HD9650/96 XXL air fryer.

But is it really worth the price difference? Some cheaper air fryers come very close to Philips HD9650/96 XXL so for some paying more for a slight improvement in taste might be not worth it. But perhaps Philips is better in other ways too?

Quality

In this case you can definitely feel that money influences quality. Philips HD9650/96 Digital Twin TurboStar XXL just feels better made and more robust than cheaper air fryers. The quality of cheaper air fryers isn’t necessarily terrible, but the difference can be felt for sure.

Noise

Fan makes some noise. They are not super loud but you can’t really call them quiet either.

Beeping isn’t obnoxiously loud as it’s usually the case with other air fryers. That’s not necessarily a good thing as you might to fail hear beeping if you are in another room once cooking has finished but at least you won’t experience discomfort and/or ear pain from loudness if you are nearby.

Presets

Philips HD9650/96 XXL air fryer has 5 cooking presets – french fries/frozen snacks, chicken, meat, fish and baking. Unlike most air fryers they only select cooking temperature for you whereas you still have to select cooking time yourself. It might be less convenient but it does make some sense as cooking time depends on how much you are cooking.

Control panel

Control panel of Philips HD9650/96 XXL air fryer features LCD display that displays cooking temperature, cooking time and selected cooking mode (manual or either one of presets).

It has 5 digital touchscreen buttons (“temperature“, “keep warm“, “timer“, “preset“ and“ On/Off“) as well a dial for adjustments. Time can be adjusted in 1 minute increments which is good however temperature is adjusted 25 degree increments. It would have been better if it could been adjusted in 5 or 10 degree increments as it would leave you with more options.

Cooking basket

4-Quart basket capacity means this isn’t the best air fryer for a family of 4 or more as it’s big enough to only cook for 2-3 people at at time. All of the basket parts are easy to clean and dishwasher safe.

You can buy many accessories for this air fryer separately like snack cover (HD9954/01), pizza baking kit (HD9953/00), grill accessory kit (HD9951/01), baking pan (HD9952/01), double layer rack (HD9950/01) and more but they are a bit expensive.

Conclusions

Philips HD9650/96 Digital Twin TurboStar XXL is a great air fryer but it’s also expensive. It’s better than cheaper units but even then for some it won’t be worth the extra price tag. However if you don’t mind spending a bit more and its size satisfies you it’s a good choice.
