Mr. Coffee Automatic Burr Mill Coffee Grinder Review

Mr. Coffee BVMC-BMH23-RB-1 (also known as Mr. Coffee SPR102810-661) is currently one of the cheapest burr grinders you can buy. If features 18 different grind settings and has bean hopper that can hold half a pound of beans.

Grinding

Mr. Coffee BVMC-BMH23-RB-1 burr grinder is better than any blade grinder but it doesn’t grind as well as more expensive models. The grind is not great in terms of consistency/evenness. Coarse and medium grinds are acceptable if you are upgrading from a blade grinder. It can’t grind very fine so won’t work with non-pressurized portafilter espresso machine but is acceptable for pressurized portafilter.

Basically if you have never had experience with burr grinders you will likely like it. However if you have owned more expensive burr grinders in the past you will be disappointed in the consistency of grinds.

If you are willing to spend more you should probably do that. Some good alternatives are Breville BCG820BSS Pro, Baratza Encore, Capresso Infinity 560.01 and OXO Brew. They are more expensive than Mr. Coffee BVMC-BMH23-RB-1 – some more, some less, but these are good models to look into if you are looking for something better. If you don’t like neither for some reason just do some research as there are other decent budget priced burr grinders. They won’t be as good as $500+ models, but if you have never had experience with high-end units it’s hard to imagine they will disappoint. If you want something that’s just slightly more expensive then check out SHARDOR CG845B – it’s not as good as previously mentioned 4 but it’s better than Mr. Coffee BVMC-BMH23-RB-1.

If you really want to spend as little as possible then Mr. Coffee BVMC-BMH23-RB-1 might suffice. It’s certainly better than using a blade grinder and in that way it might be acceptable starter unit.

Noise

Mr. Coffee BVMC-BMH23-RB-1 is loud. All burr grinders are but it’s louder than most. It’s loud enough you might wake up family members.

Controls

Mr. Coffee BVMC-BMH23-RB-1 is simple to use. To adjust grind fineness rotating bean hopper and aligning indicator on the hopper to desired grind setting. Amount of cups to be grinder is adjusted with a dial located under the hopper. To start grinding press the button located in the middle of “Cup” dial.

Cleaning

Cleaning burrs is a bit complicated as to get to them you need to unscrew the hopper. It’s not hard but it’s inconvenient for sure.

It can also get a bit messy as static cling is a thing with this burr grinder.

Conclusions

Mr. Coffee BVMC-BMH23-RB-1 is a mediocre burr grinder. It’s hard to criticize it when it’s so inexpensive compared to other models especially when many cost $500 and more. It’s probably not something you would recommend for a friend however it can be a reasonable choice for those who don’t want to or can’t justify spending more on a coffee grinder. If you are thinking about either buying a blade grinder or Mr. Coffee BVMC-BMH23-RB-1 burr grinder it’s worth to try the latter.
