KRUPS GX5000 Precision Grinder Flat Burr Coffee Review

KRUPS GX5000 is a popular budget priced flat burr coffee grinder. It features 12 grind fineness settings and can grind 2 to 12 cups worth of grounds coffee at a time. Bean hopper has 8 ounce capacity whereas grounds bin fits up to 32 cups worth of ground coffee.

Grinding

KRUPS GX5000 performs as you would expect from a cheap burr grinder. Consistency is okayish but not the best. It grind decently well for most types of coffee but just like  with seemingly all cheap burr grinders this one doesn’t grind fine enough for espresso or Turkish coffee. Another issue is that amount of cups you set seem to be inaccurate, i.e it actually grinds more than you ask for it. If you set to grind 2 cups it might actually grind enough for 3 or 4. You can however also grind manually.

Static cling

Static cling is a huge issue with KRUPS GX5000. A large portion of grounds coffee stick so hard to the grounds bin it’s hard to get it out without making a mess.

Controls

On the front of burr grinder there’s a cup selector dial that also works as an “On/Off” button. On the left side of the grinder there’s grind fineness dial. Simple design but one slight complaint is that grind fineness dial is not as easy to read and use as on other models.

Conclusions

KRUPS GX5000 is a mediocre burr grinder. It’s not entirely bad and is still usable if you don’t drink espresso or Turkish coffee but Baratza Encore and OXO Brew are better choices. They do generally sell for a slightly higher price but the difference usually isn’t that big as they are still relatively inexpensive for a burr grinder.
