KitchenAid KCG8433 Burr Coffee Grinder Review

KitchenAid KCG8433 (sold as KCG8433BM, KCG8433OB, KCG8433DG or KCG8433ER depending on color) is a 150-Watt burr coffee grinder with 70 grind coarseness settings. It was released less than 1 year ago but already has attained some notoriety. So is it any good?

Grinding

It becomes apparent very fast that KitchenAid KCG8433 grinds on a finer side. Even on coarsest setting it doesn’t grind coarse enough for French press or cold brew. Medium-coarse for pour over is questionable too. Upper burr itself is adjustable too but in this case it won’t help as it’s already on coarsest position from factory.

The good news are KitchenAid KCG8433 is really quite good for other types of grinds ranging from medium (Drip, Aeropress, Siphon) to fine and extra fine (Espresso, Turkish). Where many other grinders at this price point won’t grind fine enough for unpressurized espresso it’s not an issue for KitchenAid.

Grinds are very uniform and performance is consistent every time making for great tasting coffee. With 70 grind settings it offers a lot of adjustability which might even feel a bit too much at first as it will take a few days of fine adjustments to find the best setting for your liking.

Straight from factory some might want it to grind a bit finer for Turkish coffee on finest setting but this can be quickly fixed by making micro-adjustment on upper burr (it’s simple and takes mere 2 minutes to do so).

Noise

Burr grinders are loud, some more than the others, but at the end of the day they all make quite a bit of noise, that’s just the way it’s – at least that’s what I thought. KitchenAid KCG8433 might be the quietest burr grinder you will ever come across. Yes, it’s not what you would necessarily call quiet, but it’s significantly quieter than most of other models that competes with it.

Not sure why that’s the case but it can be speculated that KitchenAid KCG8433 grinds at low RPM which is a good thing. No, it doesn’t grind slow, but lower RPM burrs means beans are exposed to less heat and excess heat can extract flavor from beans prematurely.

Static cling

Let me ask you a question – if you have owned a burr grinder in the past, what was the most annoying thing about it? I bet a good portion of you thought of static cling and the mess it causes. So many burr grinders claim they have no static but fails to deliver on that promise. It can be difficult to find a burr grinder with no static cling and frankly at this price point you don’t have many options, but KitchenAid KCG8433 is one of them.

KitchenAid KCG8433 really has no static cling and it won’t make a mess every time you decide to make a cup of coffee.

Controls

KitchenAid KCG8433 has LCD display that shows selected grind size and amount of cups/shots as well grind time. Grind size is selected by rotating grind size knob located under bean hopper and amount of cups/shots with knob located on the right. Once you have chosen desired settings you have to press “Start/Stop” button to start grinding.

If it grinds too much or too little (might happen depending on beans you use) you can adjust grind time with adjustment knob located between buttons (“Program” & ”Start/Stop”) and grounds container.

KitchenAid KCG8433 has programming functionality that allows you to save grind settings based on grinding time. Once you have selected desired settings (Grind size, Cups/Shots and Grind Time) press “Program” button. Now the grinder will automatically adjust grind time depending on Cups/Shots you select. If you want to restore factory setting you simply “Program” button for 3 seconds.

KitchenAid KCG8433 features built-in adjustable portafilter holder that allows you to grind directly into 54-mm or 58-mm portafilters. It also comes with a cleaning brush that also works as a coffee scoop.
