Keter Novel 90-Gallon Outdoor Patio Storage Deck Box Review

Keter Novel is currently the best selling outdoor deck box in North America. With storage capacity of 90 gallons it’s medium sized patio storage box but it’s also really inexpensive for one which does raise one question – is it any good?

Quality

Keter Novel is made of polypropylene resin plastic. Panels are thin which raises concerns initially but once you assemble deck box it’s reasonably sturdy albeit does feel slightly flimsy. It’s obviously not as sturdy as more expensive units but for the price sturdiness is decent.

Some of the other similarly priced and sized storage containers (as well some that are even more pricey) are a lot less robust to the point they are barely usable and have other issues like bent lids, panels not lining up properly etc. – not the case with Keter Novel.

Keter claims that the lid of Novel 90 gallon deck box can support 485 lbs of weight and even though it seems to handle weight of 180 lb male just fine without any signs of too much stress (like bending) perhaps you shouldn’t sit on it (at least not regularly). Additional weight causes more stress on supporting structure which might make it wear out and if it does then you don’t really know at what point it becomes unsafe to sit on it. Maybe I’m just too paranoid and it will be just fine long-term even when used as a bench frequently but being cautious doesn’t hurt especially when we are talking about seating made of what’s essentially plastic.

According to Keter storage weight capacity (how much weight you can put inside) is 110 pounds (50 kg).

Features

Keter Novel can be locked with a padlock but the holes are a bit small so larger one might not fit (as you might tell it doesn’t come with one). Since the entire thing is made of plastic it could be a better idea to get a lock with wire cable instead of metal which might break the plastic.

Weatherproofness

Keter Novel is water resistant. Water from regular rainfall fails to get inside and contents stay dry however Keter Novel isn’t airtight to prevent growth of mold so perhaps during very heavy rain some water or moisture can get in.

Assembly

Keter Novel is rather simple to assemble. Instructions are not very detailed and a bit too generic but the whole process is not hard to figure out. No tools required – just snap the pieces together.

You can expect it to take 5 to 15 minutes to assemble depending on how good you are with putting things together.

Conclusions

If you want inexpensive storage box that’s actually usable then Keter Novel probably offers best value for money. Since it’s something you could call budget priced it’s obviously not super sturdy but neither is it not too fragile.
