Husqvarna 120i 14-Inch Electric Battery Powered Chainsaw Review

Husqvarna 120i is 40-Volt electric battery powered chainsaw with brushless motor that’s equipped with 14-inch bar and chain. So how does electric chainsaw from the most popular chainsaw manufacturer compare to its gas powered models and electric chainsaws from other manufacturers?

Cutting performance

Husqvarna 120i is marketed as a casual use/light duty chainsaw and it really is just that. It tackles basic cutting tasks pretty well but struggles with heavier duty stuff. It can cut through 12+ inch hardwoods but it’s gonna be slow and will drain battery fast. If you have to do it occasionally it doesn’t matter much but this is not a saw for such jobs to be tackled frequently.

Husqvarna 120i doesn’t cut as fast as similarly priced Husqvarna gas chainsaw but it doesn’t necessarily mean it’s worse. It really depends on how you plan to use your chainsaw. Husqvarna 120i might be a better choice than gas chainsaws for light duty jobs since it’s light, doesn’t emit harmful fumes, is significantly less noisy and requires less maintenance. Some still might prefer the gas unit due to better cutting performance despite the other advantages of 120i.

Husqvarna 120i also isn’t the best cutting battery powered chainsaw although it’s decent unit for the price. Makita XCU04PT LXT and Greenworks GCS80420 do cut significantly better but they are slightly more expensive, bigger and heavier so it might not be fair to compare them to Husqvarna 120i as they are designed for more serious use and are essentially different kind of chainsaws.

At no load Husqvarna 120i can move its chain at 37.73 feet per second whereas Makita XCU04PT LXT at 65.6 ft/s and Greenworks GCS80420 at 50 ft/s. But since they are bigger and heavier chainsaws they are designed for different purpose so it’s not fair to compare them. Chain speed isn’t the only contributing factor to cutting performance and speed but it’s one of them.

Battery

Husqvarna 120i comes with 40V 4Ah lithium-ion battery and battery charger. Battery has 3 built-in LED lights that show how much battery life is left.

Battery itself might not be reliable as there are complaints from some consumers that theirs have died after few weeks or months of use.

Features

Husqvarna 120i has all the features you would expect from modern chainsaw like automatic oiling system, tool-less chain tensioner and inertia chain brake.
