Hamilton Beach 40880 Stainless Steel Electric Kettle Review

Hamilton Beach 40880 is a stainless steel electric kettle with 1500 watt power supply and 1.7 liter capacity.

Performance

Hamilton Beach 40880 electric kettle heats up water fast – faster than a stovetop or microwave does. With that being said it doesn’t perform wildly different than its competitors as most of them have same or similar power supply and capacity.

The water tastes and smells pure. Even if you do notice some smell/taste initially that’s fairly normal and can happen with any kettle. This should go away after doing few cycles or boiling water and pouring it out. If you do notice some smell or taste you can also wash inside with baking soda and vinegar.

One thing to note is that handle is a bit larger than usual which some will prefer and others will not.

Quality

Hamilton Beach 40880 feels robust and sturdy as you would expect from Hamilton Beach. The base does feel a bit flimsy and is lightweight but that doesn’t matter much.

The housing is made of stainless steel which is nice however this model isn’t 100% plastic free (like nearly all of the other ones that are similarly priced) – the water level window is made of plastic and there are some plastic parts in the lid too.

Since this kettle has single-wall design the housing does soak in heat from the hot water. This means the outside will be hot to touch until water cool down inside the kettle. This is another thing you can’t really complain about as double-wall kettles typically cost a lot more.

Majority of consumer feedback is positive however as with any product there are some that have experienced some issues too. From those that did have negative experience the most common complaints include leakage, rust or kettle stopping working all together.

Features

Like most modern electric kettles Hamilton Beach 40880 has auto-shut off safety feature – it will automatically turn off soon after the water has started boiling. Keep in mind that this feature won’t work if you leave the lid open (this also applies to nearly all other electric kettles with auto-shutoff feature).

There’s a water level window on both sides (meaning you can read water level no matter in which hand you hold the kettle) and it displays 6 different volume levels: 0.5 liters (minimum), 0.75 liters, 1.0 liters, 1.2 liters, 1.5 liters and 1.7 liters (maximum).

Aesthetics

Hamilton Beach 40880 looks a bit plain and basic compared to some of the other kettles that have a more modern look. Of course this is subjective and depends on your preferences but some might prefer more modern looking kettle that works similarly.

Verdict

Hamilton Beach 40880 is a fairly basic electric kettle that works just fine. Is it the one to buy? It’s hard to say. There are so many different similarly priced electric kettles that it’s hard to single out one of them as the best – person A might prefer one and person B might prefer another for various reasons.
