Frigidaire EFIC117 26-lbs/24h Portable Compact Ice Maker (Review)

Frigidaire EFIC117 is a portable countertop ice maker than can make up to 26 pounds of ice cubes in a day. So how good (or bad) is it?

Ice production

Frigidaire EFIC117 can make ice cubes in 2 different sizes – small and large. It must be said that “Large” ice cubes aren’t really large, they are still somewhat on the small side.

Ice cube quality is good. Frigidaire EFIC117 makes 9 ice cubes per batch and each batch takes usually 6 to 11 minutes to be made.

Keep in mind that first few batches might take longer to be made and be of lower quality (for example ice cubes will be smaller). Usually by the time it starts to make third batch it has managed to properly cool down.

Ice basket

Ice basket can hold up to 1.5 lbs of ice cubes. In reality ice production will pause when there’s a bit over 1 pound there (due to sensor that detects when ice basket is full).

Another thing is that ice basket isn’t refrigerated meaning that made ice cubes will slowly melt if left there.

Control panel

Control panel features two buttons (“On/Off” for turning ice maker on or off and “Select” for choosing ice cube size).

It also has 5 indicator lights. Two of them warns you about empty water reservoir of full ice basket. Another two are for showing which ice cube size setting has been selected – small or large, either has its own indicator. Then there’s one more indicator light that simply shows that ice maker is turned on.

Features

Frigidaire EFIC117 has two sensors that as previously mentioned detect when ice basket is full or water reservoir empty – if it detects either it will pause ice production. Capacity of water reservoir is 2.3 quarts or 2.1 liters.

Frigidaire EFIC117 also has transparent window so you can see how many ice cubes are in ice basket without opening the lid. This is somewhat important as opening lid will let warm air inside the ice maker which can then affect the quality of next 1-2 batches.

Reliability

Some consumers have complained that their unit stopped working after couple months of use. This doesn’t seem to be the case with most units but since there are some reports about it happening it’s something that tends to happen sometimes.

Conclusions
