Eureka Oro Mignon XL Espresso Grinder Review

Eureka Oro Mignon XL is the top of the line grinder from Eureka Mignon model line up. It’s equipped with 320 watt motor and large 65 millimeter Diamond Inside burrs. No actual diamonds are used in the process of producing burrs, it’s just the name for patented thermal cryogenic treatment process which treats burrs at -193°C (-315.4°F) to form increased crystal structure that makes them more durable and increases their longevity.

Grinding Performance

Eureka Oro Mignon XL easily grinds fine enough for espresso but that was pretty much expected. The real question how consistent does the grounds come out and the answer is very, very consistent. That’s not a surprise either as other Eureka Mignon burr grinders performed well in this area too and the Oro Mignon XL has larger, more advanced burrs which definitely helps too.

But can it do coarser grinds? Yes, it can. Medium coarseness grinds are still very uniform. You start to notice decrease in quality only when you go coarser as that’s when some fines start to appear and some grounds come out as clumps. Still good for pour over but not perfect.

Is there retention? Yes, there is a little bit of retention. Not a significant amount, but there’s some. It’s pretty easy to get rid of it though. Eureka Oro Mignon XL has bean hopper shut off valve that you can close and then grind manually to get all of the retention out. There are only a handful of burr grinders that have showed virtually no retention in tests but that doesn’t mean they are better in other areas as well.

What’s retention? Basically grounds coffee that remains in burrs or chute after you stop grinding. If you don’t grind for a while they can go stale or if you change coarseness setting then some of the wrong sized grounds can get mixed in.

Noise

Eureka Oro Mignon XL burr grinder has built-in sound insulation and it definitely helps as it’s pretty quiet compared to most other grinders. It’s obviously not completely silent but you might get away without waking up everyone else in your house.

Controls

Eureka Oro Mignon XL has touch sensitive screen with 4 buttons. Two of the buttons are for selecting shot amount (1 or 2) and the other two are for adjusting grinding time (- and +).

Grind coarseness is selected with a stepless knob. Stepless adjustment means you can make really really small adjustments however it also means it can be difficult to dial it to a specific setting and you might have to try a few times to get it just right.

To start grinding just insert portafilter into portafilter holder, this will make portafilter to hit activation buttons and the grinder will start to grind. You can also grind in manual mode by pressing both shot buttons at the same time.

Features

Eureka Oro Mignon XL has portafilter holder and adjustable portafilter fork. It also has bean hopper shut off valve which allows you to get all retention out.

Size and weight

Eureka Oro Mignon XL weighs 15.9 pounds and measures approximately 4.7 inches wide by 7.1 inches deep by 15 inches high.

Conclusions

Eureka Oro Mignon XL is exceptional grinder that’s definitely worth its price. It’s simple to use, grinds exceptionally well and feels well made.
