Espressione MEC-5198 is an inexpensive burr grinder even among other inexpensive burr grinders if that makes sense. Can it be a decent grinder despite the low price?
Espressione MEC-5198 is a budget priced burr grinder so have realistic expectations, this isn’t going to be grinder that grinds to perfection. You have to have realistic expectations.
Espressione MEC-5198 has 15 different size grind settings. The coarsest setting is not that coarse, it’s actually a bit too fine for French Press. Opposite is true too, finest setting isn’t quite as fine as you would expect for a good Espresso. These are just general assumptions as you might get away with it in some cases depending on different factors (i.e. beans you use, espresso machine you have etc.). Espressione MEC-5198 will grind for anything in-between Espresso and French Press though.
So what about consistency? Of course grinds won’t be perfectly uniform with an inexpensive burr grinder but consistency is pretty good for the money. Certainly miles better than using a blade grinder.
Static cling is perhaps the biggest flaw of Espressione MEC-5198. Some of the grounds coffee sticks to ground container, some might get thrown out on countertop making a small mess. There are ways to reduce static cling (putting a small piece of foil inside grounds container or adding a drop or two of water to beans in container and shaking it to distribute it evenly) but there will likely still be some left.
Bean hopper and grounds container
Bean hopper capacity is 8.5 ounces whereas grounds container will hold up to 4 ounces of ground coffee.
You can’t expect a burr grinder to be exceptional at this price point and Espressione MEC-5198 isn’t. It has some flaws and might not work for all types of coffee however the grind quality is not bad for the money.
