EdgeStar IB120SS 12lbs/24h Ice Maker Machine Review

EdgeStar IB120SS doubles down as a ice maker and freezer – not only it makes ice cubes but unlike most ice machines also keeps them frozen. Because it has built-in front vent and doesn’t require drain line it can be left freestanding or be built-in. It produces ice at less than half the rate of EdgeStar IB250SS and can hold about 3 times less ice cubes too but it’s also less expensive – so which EdgeStar ice maker is a better choice – IB120SS or IB250SS?

Ice production

EdgeStar IB120SS makes up to 12 lbs of crescent shaped ice in 24 hours – or about half a pound per hour. Perhaps not enough to keep up with a demand if you are throwing a party however since it works as a freezer too you can make them beforehand – EdgeStar IB120SS can hold 6 lbs of ice cubes. Once the ice bin is full it automatically pauses ice production.

Ice quality is good however when you use ice maker for the first time first few batches might be bad. That’s why you should let it run for 3 hours and disregard (throw away) all ice cubes it made so it clears up any residue left from manufacturing process. From then on you can start enjoying following batches of lovely crescent shaped ice.

Control panel

Control panel is very basic and simple to use. There are no buttons or displays only 1 toggle switch to turn on the unit on or off.

Quality

Ice maker feels well made – it doesn’t quite leave impression of a high-end appliance but quality is appropriate for pricing.

EdgeStar IB120SS comes with 25 foot long 1/4″ water line and doesn’t require drain line. It has sensors to detect when ice bin is full and when it’s it pauses ice production. EdgeStar IB120SS is ADA height compliant.

Door is reversible and can be installed for left or right side opening.

Defrosting

EdgeStar IB120SS is not frost free. You have to manually defrost it when frost is 1/4 inch thick or thicker which is about once a month. It’s pretty simple process, you just turn the unit off and let the frost to melt which takes anywhere between 1 to few hours. You can put a large towel inside the ice machine so it soaks up the melted water to prevent it getting on floor.

Dimensions and weight

EdgeStar IB120SS measures 25.1875 inches high, 15 inches wide and 18.5 inches deep. It weighs 54 pounds.

Conclusions

For the money EdgeStar IB120SS is a good ice maker with some minor flaws. It’s not as good as EdgeStar IB250SS but not everyone is willing to pay premium.
