DEWALT DCST922B String Trimmer Review

A few months ago DEWALT released their newest string trimmer model – DEWALT DCST922B. It’s successor of DCST920B model which we have reviewed in the past and described as “missed opportunity” – it was pretty powerful but had too many design flaws. So has DEWALT fixed all the issues with DCST922B or is it still a disappointment despite the great cutting performance.

Performance

DEWALT DCST922B uses 0.080” string line and has a cutting swath of 14 inches. It features variable speed trigger as well speed-control switch that lets you switch between two modes of maximum RPM: 4,600 & 6,000.

Low speed has no trouble to cut through regular grass and weed, for the thicker grass and brush you will need to use high speed mode but it handles heavier stuff well too. It’s not quite as powerful as gas string trimmers but it’s powerful enough for most consumers. You won’t use it for commercial purposes but for a regular household it’s powerful enough.

Major flaw – vibration

What makes DEWALT DCST922B almost unusable is that it vibrates like hell. This is something a lot of other consumers have experienced and complained about too, however most don’t (complain about vibration). Maybe every unit doesn’t vibrate like crazy, maybe it’s a common problem that doesn’t affect majority of units – it’s hard to say.

The problem lies within the head – it’s terribly balanced. Good news it that you can buy a different head and replace it – but that’s just an extra hassle and you have to spend even more money for a problem that shouldn’t exist in the first place.

Maybe in the future DEWALT will fix the issue and update DCST922B with a balanced head so by time your read this the vibration issue might be fixed already.

Noise

DEWALT DCST922B is relatively quiet – it’s a lot more quiet than gas string trimmers and quieter than most electric ones.

Ergonomics

DEWALT DCST922B weighs 7.9 lbs without batteries, so it’s a bit on heavier side for electric string trimmers – it’s 0.6 lbs heavier than its predecessor.

DEWALT DCST922B weed wacker can be folded but this feature makes the unit heavier and you can’t move handle because of it.

Overall ergonomics aren’t great, it just doesn’t feel balanced. That’s not something everyone complains about so maybe it just depends on your body type.

Features

DEWALT DCST922B has bump feed head which works pretty well.

It also has a guard which doesn’t work well – it does a rather bad job of protecting you from grass clippings. DEWALT actually offers you to purchase a larger guard – kinda makes you feel like they made the one that comes with the unit bad on purpose.

Conclusions

Just like it’s predecessor DEWALT DCST922B disappoints despite the decent cutting performance. Many consumers does seem to be satisfied with it but I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone.
