Danby DIM2500SSDB Portable Countertop Ice Maker Review

Danby DIM2500SSDB is a portable countertop ice maker that can produce up to 25 pounds of ice in a day. It’s a less popular model but that doesn’t mean it’s worse than its competitors. So is Danby DIM2500SSDB hidden gem or is it obscure for a reason?

Ice production

Danby DIM2500SSDB uses environmentally friendly R134A refrigerant. It produces 8 bullet shaped ice cubes with hollow inside every ~10 minutes.

Ice cube quality is mediocre – it’s not terrible but neither is it great. First of all this ice machine can make ice cubes in only 1 size and that size is small. Ice cubes are not tasteless and will taste very similar to the water you put in the water reservoir. If you use distilled water with no taste then ice cubes might turn out the same way.

Other issue is that ice bin area is not refrigerated so once made ice cubes start to melt so you pretty much have to use them straightaway or put in freezer.

Features

Danby DIM2500SSDB has sensors that detect when ice bin is full or water reservoir empty and once that happens it plays audible alarm which is very loud 8 beeps which can be super infuriating. About 2 pounds of ice cubes fit in the ice bin.

Danby DIM2500SSDB has self-clean function that you should use before you start making ice for the first time ever. You have to add 1:1 mix of water and vinegar in water reservoir, enter stand-by mode and hold power button for around 5 seconds until it beeps. After that drain the unit by removing drain cap and plug (located in the rear). Then add fresh water up to the max fill line and once again enter hold power button until it beeps while the unit is in stand by mode. Now it will rinse everything and once that’s finished drain the unit once again and let the unit dry with open lid.

Danby DIM2500SSDB has transparent window on the lid so you can see how much ice cubes have been made without opening it and it also comes with an ice scoop.

Control panel

Has only one button – you will mostly press it to start or stop making ice but it can also turn standby mode on or clear faults.

Other than that it also has 3 indicators: one on the left indicates that the unit has run out of water and you have to add more, the middle one indicates that ice bin is full and the one on right is simply a power indicator.

Aesthetics

Although design isn’t glamorous housing of Danby DIM2500SSDB is made of stainless steel which is pretty cool since most competing products are made of plastic.

Reliability

Danby DIM2500SSDB seems to break more often than other ice makers at least according to consumer reports. Might not be the case but there are quite a bit of complaints that unit stop working after few months of use.

Conclusions

Danby DIM2500SSDB is not a terrible ice maker but it’s not the best you can get for the money. It does have two things that similarly priced ice makers usually don’t though: self-cleaning function and stainless steel housing.
