Calphalon Air Fryer Oven Review

Calphalon TSCLTRDG1-AF is 11-in-1 air fryer oven with 26.4 quart (25 liter) interior volume. It has selectable temperature range of 150°F to 450°F.

Cooking with Calphalon TSCLTRDG1-AF air fryer oven

Calphalon TSCLTRDG1-AF air fryer oven cooks well and heat distribution is even (which is not always the case with countertop ovens). Temperature is also accurate and Calphalon air fryer oven holds (maintains) it very well.

It has 11 different cooking functions: toast, air fry, bagel, bake, roast, broil, pizza, reheat, keep warm, defrost and dehydrate. Most of them work well however the Air Fry cooking function doesn’t work as well as a good standalone air fryer (but it’s still fairly decent). Perhaps the convection fan is not powerful enough to achieve same results just as fast.

It also takes a bit long to toast bread but if you are patient it will do the job just fine. With that being said regular toaster will still be a better appliance for this purpose. All of the other cooking functions seem to work without any particular flaws.

Calphalon air fryer oven doesn’t heat up your whole kitchen like a regular oven does but this applies to most other countertop ovens too so Calphalon TSCLTRDG1-AF is not unique in this regard.

Some consumers have reported noticing a funny smell when using Calphalon TSCLTRDG1-AF for the first few times but that goes away eventually.

Preheating

Like most countertop ovens Calphalon TSCLTRDG1-AF does a preheating before it starts cooking. After the preheating is done and oven has achieved desired temperature it will beep. This is when you would typically put the food in the oven. After the beeping you have 1 minute to do so and press “Start” button again as otherwise the oven will turn off. The countdown starts when the unit starts cooking (it doesn’t when it preheats).

If you think you might miss the 1 minute time frame or want to put food inside before the preheating instead of after there’s workaround – you can press “Start” twice in the beginning which will make oven start cooking immediately after preheating is done.

Not all cooking functions use preheat. The ones that do are: air fry, bake, roast, broil, pizza and dehydrate.

Noise

Calphalon TSCLTRDG1-AF is fairly quiet – significantly quieter than most countertop ovens.

Quality

The overall quality seems to be quite good. Calphalon TSCLTRDG1-AF feels a lot nicer than cheaper models.

Control panel

Control panel of Calphalon TSCLTRDG1-AF air fryer oven consists of LCD display, 3 buttons and 2 control knobs.

LCD display is nice and easy to read. The 3 of the buttons are: “Light” (for internal light), “Start” and “Cancel/Off”.

The upper control knob is used to select cooking function. There’s also a button in the middle of it called “Turbo Convection” which increases convection (fan) power.

The lower control knob is for adjusting temperature and time. Temperature can be adjusted in 5 degree increments. This control knob also ha a button in the middle of it and it’s used for switching between temperature and time adjustment.

Accessories

Calphalon air fryer oven comes with air fry basket, non-stick baking pan, wire rack, and removable crumb tray.

Other

The top side of Calphalon TSCLTRDG1-AF gets quite hot during cooking so you should try to avoid touching it during that process or soon after. This is a common thing for countertop ovens however the rest of the housing does seem to get less hot compared to many other models.

Verdict

Calphalon TSCLTRDG1-AF is fairly decent air fryer oven that performs well most of the time however it could have a more powerful fan (but that would also make it louder). It’s a decent unit for the money however it’s worth to consider other models too like Breville BOV845BSS or Ninja DT251 Foodi.
