BLACK+DECKER LCC222 20V Max Kit Review: LST201 String Trimmer & LSW221 Sweeper

If you have been looking for a string trimmer chances are you have come across BLACK+DECKER LCC222 20V Max kit which includes LST201 string trimmer and LSW221 leaf blower.

BLACK+DECKER LCC222 20V Max kit is currently one of the top sellers in North America and the price is very budget friendly – whole kit costs less than many string trimmers do on their own. However one question does arise: considering the low price is this kit really any good?

BLACK+DECKER LST201 String Trimmer

BLACK+DECKER LST201 isn’t as powerful as gas powered string trimmers and neither is it among most powerful electric ones. That being said it’s still powerful enough to do light duty and some medium duty trimming jobs. It’s not powerful enough to cut through overgrowths and really thick stuff, but for simply trimming grass it does the job.

BLACK+DECKER LST201 has 20 Volt engine. It has cutting swath of 10 inches and does 9,000 RPM. It uses 0.065” line and AF-100 replacement stool.

It also has automatic feed spool system which feed the line and easily converts to wheeled edger.

Ergonomics

BLACK+DECKER LST201 is very lightweight – it weighs just 4.5 lbs making it easy to use. Height of the trimmer is also adjustable to suit your own height and it has telescoping handle making it rather comfortable to use.

It’s also compact making it convenient to store.

Battery

BLACK+DECKER LST201 runs on 1.5 Ah 20V battery that’s compatible with other Black and Decker appliances (including the sweeper included in the kit). Battery lasts 20-30 minutes on single charge.

It takes 2-3 hours to charge it from completely depleted to fully charged. You can also purchase fast charger that’s not included in the kit which reduces charging time to 20-30 minutes.

When you are charging your battery the charger will display 1 out of 4 codes:

1. Green light on: battery is fully charged;
2. Beeping green light: Battery is being charged;
3. Fast Beeping red light: Battery is broken;
4. Red Long beep Slow beep loop – battery is overheated (let it cool down before charging)

Changing spool

Changing the spool is simple and easy process: You have to remove spool cap from the spool housing in the trimmer head by just pressing a button. Then you just take out old spool and insert the new one which is very simple as well. All that’s left to do is to put back the spool cap back in and that’s it!

Conclusions

For the pricing BLACK+DECKER LST201 is a pretty good string trimmer. It’s not very powerful, has rather small cutting swath but it’s powerful enough for simple jobs. It’s also very light and convenient to use.

It certainly won’t win any “Best String Trimmer” awards but depending on your intended use it might be a good choice if you don’t want to spend a lot more money on more powerful trimmers.

BLACK+DECKER LSW221 Sweeper / Leaf Blower

BLACK+DECKER LSW221 outputs air with speed of up to 130 mph. It’s not powerful enough to be called proper leaf blower as it’s not great for pushing leaves around your whole yard but it works great as sweeper for clearing leaves or other stuff from driveway, sidewalk, deck, patio etc.

Charge lasts about 10-15 minutes on 1.5 Ah batteries.

BLACK+DECKER LSW221 sweeper is light (3.7 lbs) and small making in very convenient to use.

Conclusions

BLACK+DECKER LSW221 is called sweeper not a leaf blower for a reason. It can be a good appliance for specific applications but it’s not an impressive machine by any means.

Overall BLACK+DECKER LCC222 Kit can be hit-or-miss depending on your intended use. Neither LST201 string trimmer nor LSW221 sweeper are super capable high-end machines, but for simple tasks they are good enough.
