Best Wood Cutting Boards (Review)
I have done extensive research to help you choose the best wood cutting board out of 17 different ones. Find out which wood cutting boards you should consider and which ones to avoid!
#1 Sonder Los Angeles Acacia Wood Cutting Board
Sonder Los Angeles acacia wood cutting board is made of eco friendly acacia wood that was grown in 100% sustainable plantations (which are Forest Stewardship Council certified).
Sonder Los Angeles acacia cutting board is 16 inches wide and 12 inches long. Thickness wise it’s very thick – 1.5 inches, whereas most of the cutting boards are well under 1 inch. Extra thickness makes the board more durable, however on the other hand it becomes more inconvenient to store. And sturdy this board is! It’s well made, very durable and should last for many years to come.
Sonder Los Angeles acacia cutting board is two sided – one side is for prepping and chopping food with groove to catch liquids (and it’s quite deep so it catches quite a lot!), the other one has container so it can be used for serving. It also has inner handles on the sides which are deep enough to get a good grip which is a nice feature if you will use it for serving because the board has some weight to it as it’s quite large and very thick (but it isn’t too heavy in a way it would cause any inconvenience).
It’s pretty beautiful too – it isn’t quite the art work that some of the most beautiful cutting boards are but it certainly looks a lot better than generic ones.
As time goes the side or sides you cut on will get a bit lighter but you can easily restore it with a bit of mineral oil.
Overall this is very sturdy and well made cutting board. It isn’t among the very cheapest boards but it’s really well designed, high quality and heavy duty so it will last for many years to come, making it a great value for money.
#2 Royal Craft Wood Bamboo Cutting Board
Royal Craft Wood bamboo cutting board is made of 100% organic bamboo that’s antibacterial, eco-friendly and easy on knives. It’s pretty big – 18 inches wide and 12 inches long so it offers quite a bit of cutting surface which makes it convenient to use and creates less mess. It also has drip groove that can catch quite a lot of liquid. Cutting board is pretty big and that reflects to the volume of groove itself.
Royal Craft Wood bamboo cutting board is 0.75″ thick, it feels well made and surprisingly durable for its price. Side handles makes it easier to to take/hold the board which is a feature that doesn’t matter much to me because I can hold the board just fine without them. It’s very water resistant which means it absorbs less liquid than other types of cutting boards, which increases lifetime of the cutting board and decreases chance of cross contamination. It’s suggested to handwash this cutting board because dishwasher can harm it longterm due to hot temperatures and detergents.
Despite being rated #2 it’s not quite among the very best cutting boards, but it does excel at one thing – being amazing value for money. It’s surprisingly sturdy and well designed for its low pricing.
#3 AtoHom Walnut Wood Cutting Board
AtoHom cutting board is made of highest-grade (FAS) american black walnut hardwood that won’t blunt your knives. It’s 18 inches wide and 12 inches long, it’s also quite thicker than most cutting boards at 1.2 inches. Due to quality wood and strong thickness it is really durable and heavy duty. Overall quality is great. It’s relatively heavy, but has built-in handles on the sides. They are a bit shallow though, if they were deeper then you could get a much better grip but deeper handles could affect the durability of the board.
It has juice groove that’s relatively wide and deep so it catches a lot of liquid. It’s also easy to clean. It’s also beautiful which might not matter to some but I personally appreciate aesthetically pleasing objects.
Overall AtoHom walnut cutting board is a bit expensive when it comes to cutting boards, but it’s really well made and is actually better than many cutting boards that are even more expensive and cost over $100. If you are willing to spend a bit more then this is the one to choose.
#4 FANICHI Extra Large Acacia Wood Cutting Board
FANICHI extra large acacia wood cutting board is 1.5 inches thick – twice as thick as majority of cutting boards. It’s sturdy, heavy and has smooth finish. It’s eco friendly and the acacia wood is from 100% sustainable plantations (which are Forest Stewardship Council certified). It’s two sided – one side features deep juice grooves and the other has a nice storage hole which can be used for serving food. It also has deep inner side handles so it’s easy to carry when serving food.
Overall for the pricing this is a good cutting board.
#5 SKY LIGHT Cutting Board
SKY LIGHT cutting board is made from acacia wood. It’s well made, feels sturdy and won’t give you splinters. It’s 15 inches wide, 10 inches long and 1 inch thick. Most of the cutting boards are 0.75 inches or less thick. Extra thickness makes the board sturdier. It has groove to catch liquids but it could be deeper for more capacity.
Overall for the pricing this is a good cutting board.
#6 Glorytec Bamboo Extra Large Cutting Board
Glorytec Bamboo extra large cutting board is made of all natural antibacterial bamboo. The cutting board is very well made, sturdy and quite attractive too. It’s 12 inches wide, 6 inches tall and 0.8 inches thick.
Glorytec cutting board is two sided. On one side you will find groove for catching liquids and on the other side there are two compartments which can be used for multiple purposes like serving food or storing chopped ingredients while you finish chopping the rest.
Comes with 8 removable silicone feet which make the board stand more securely when draining after being washed.
#7 KITOP Bamboo Cutting Board Set
KITOP bamboo cutting board set includes 3 cutting boards:
- Small: (20 cm by 20 cm | 20 cm = ~7.9 inches)
- Medium: (24 cm by 24 cm | 24 cm = ~9.4 inches)
- Large: (44 cm by 28 cm | 20 cm = ~17.3 inches; 28 cm = ~11 inches)
They are made from FDA approved, eco-friendly and BPA free natural bamboo. They are lightweight but feel sturdy and well made. Should last for many years as long as you don’t wash them in dishwasher or allow to soak, you are supposed to hand wash them with warm water and soap.. Surface is smooth. All of the boards have grooves to catch liquid but they are not very deep so can’t catch that much.
Overall value for money is amazing, you pretty much get 3 boards for a price of one. They aren’t quite the best cutting boards but they are pretty well made for sure.
#8 WOOD CITY Bamboo Cutting Board
WOOD CITY bamboo cutting board measures at 18 by 12 inches, it’s 0.9 inches thick meaning it’s a bit thicker than your average cutting board. Bamboo is friendly to knives and won’t dull them. It has 4 anti-slip pads that prevent board from sliding around. Has grooves to catch liquids.
Overall it’s a decent cutting board for the price.
#9 Sonder Los Angeles Walnut Wood Cutting Board
Sonder Los Angeles walnut wood cutting board is edge grain constructed board with 100% food grade mineral oil finish. The board is simply gorgeous, it’s perhaps the most beautiful cutting board on the market currently (and in person it looks even better than in pictures). This beauty comes at a price – although Sonder Los Angeles walnut cutting board isn’t really that expensive, it still costs more than majority of other cutting boards.
Quality wise Sonder Los Angeles walnut cutting board is mediocre. There are more sturdier cutting boards for half the price. Sonder Los Angeles walnut cutting board is very soft and although it means it won’t dull your knives, it also means that they will leave traces easily and that it’s not that durable. It’s also prone to developing splinters.
Sonder Los Angeles walnut cutting board has built-in inner handles. It’s 17 inches wide and 13 inches long.
Overall Sonder Los Angeles walnut wood cutting board feels more than an art piece rather than a proper heavy duty cutting board that will last many years to come.
#10 HHXRISE Cutting Board
HHXRISE cutting board is made of 100% natural and BPA free bamboo. Bamboo is gentle on your knives and won’t dull them. HHXRISE cutting board is 17 inches wide, 12.6 inches long and 0.72 inches thick. Cutting board is shipped without finish on it and it’s quite dry so it would be advisable to treat it with some food grade mineral oil. It soaks up mineral oil very well. It has three built-in compartments on one side of the board where you can put chopped ingredients while you finish the rest. Also had groove for catching liquid but it doesn’t go around the whole board so some liquids still might escape.
Don’t put in it dishwasher if you want it to last for years, hand wash it instead.
Overall this is a good cutting board for the price.
#11 Utopia Kitchen Natural Bamboo Cutting Boards
Utopia Kitchen Natural Bamboo cutting boards set comes with 3 cutting boards:
- Large cutting board (12 x 16 inches)
- Medium cutting board (9 x 13 inches)
- Small cutting board (9 x 11 inches)
All of them are 0.8 inches thick. The build quality is mediocre and they aren’t particularly sturdy. You could expect them to last about a year before they break apart completely, although don’t be surprised if they don’t last even that long. Applying food grade mineral oil will help them to last a bit longer.
Overall the quality of these boards are not satisfactory but they are very cheap considering you get 3 cutting boards.
#12 Greener Chef Extra Large Bamboo Cutting Board
Greener Chef extra large bamboo cutting board measures at 18 inches by 12 inches. It’s made of 100% moso bamboo that’s FDA approved, antimicrobial, BPA free and formaldehyde free. It has groove to catch liquid but it’s pretty shallow compared to some other boards. Greener Chef extra large bamboo cutting board does splinter a lot unfortunately and doesn’t handle cuts from good knives well.
Overall this cutting boards is of mediocre quality at best and couldn’t be recommended.
#13 Utopia Kitchen Extra Large Bamboo Cutting Board
Utopia Kitchen extra large bamboo cutting board measures at 17 inches by 12 inches. It’s not well made. Although it does feel thick and heavy it’s prone to warping and splitting. Finish is a bit rough too. Apparently it’s FDA and FSC approved but does it really matter when the product is mediocre at best? Well I guess you can’t expect much at this pricing. At least it has a liquid groove so it’s not super basic.
#14 Virginia Boys Kitchens Wood Cutting Board
Virginia Boys Kitchens wood cutting board is made from kiln dried black walnut wood. It’s not properly sanded – has rough corners and grooves, feels like it might give you a splinter. It’s 17 inches wide and 11 inches long. It’s made in USA.
Virginia Boys Kitchens wood cutting board is shipped in raw unseasoned form and manufacturer suggest you to add seasoning oil or finishing wax of your liking, however it doesn’t retain the oil well.
Overall the quality of Virginia Boys Kitchens cutting board does not match the price. You can find far better cutting boards that are 2-3 times cheaper.
#15 Ironwood Gourmet 28218 Square Charleston End Grain Chef’s Board
Ironwood Gourmet 28218 cutting board is made of acacia wood. It’s 14 inches wide, 14 inches long and 1.25 inches thick. Quality is bad and the board is flimsy. It’s very prone to cracking and breaking. Quality control is bad too as you could receive product that has patches of dried glue all over the board.
Overall you should look for another cutting board. This one is badly made and far from cheap. You can find good ones for half the price of this one.
#16 Farberware 5070344 Bamboo Cutting Board (Set of 3)
Farberware 5070344 bamboo cutting board set comes with three cutting boards:
- Small cutting board (8 x 5.5 inches)
- Medium cutting board (8 x 10 inches)
- Large cutting board (11 x 14 inches)
They are not 100% made from bamboo, they are laminated together with some kind of other wood. They are pretty fragile and won’t last a long time. Cutting boards are as basic are they come without any features like liquid grooves.
Overall it would be wise to pass on these cutting boards despite the low price. They are very poorly made and won’t last for long.
#17 John Boos R02 Maple Wood Edge Grain Cutting Board
John Boos R02 cutting board is made of northern hard rock maple wood. Size wise it huge – 24 inches long and 18 inches wide, at 1.5 inches it’s also twice as thick than the average cutting board.
According to manufacturer the cutting board is R Boards are NSF certified, however the quality is bad. They are prone to denting, cracking and warping. You can’t expect this cutting board to last a long time, quite the opposite actually, it probably will last a very short time before it disintegrates.
It has handgrips on the sides which are a shallow and would be more comfortable to use if were deeper. It’s two sided – both sides are flat.
Overall you should look for a different cutting board. This one is expensive yet bad quality. It’s not the worst cutting board on this list, but the value for money sure is!
