Best Frigidaire Portable/Countertop Ice Cube Makers (Review)

Frigidaire makes so many different models of ice cube makers it can be hard to choose which one to buy. To make this choice easier today we will find out which ones are the best!

#1 Frigidaire EFIC452-SSBLACK XL

Frigidaire EFIC452-SSBLACK XL ice maker makes up to 40 lbs of ice cubes in 24 hours or roughly 1.6 lbs per hour. Most countertop ice makers for sale are capable of producing only up to 26 lbs per day.

Sheer ice output is not the only thing that makes if different than most. Frigidaire EFIC452-SSBLACK XL makes square shaped ice cubes whereas most make bullet shaped with hollow inside. It can be a good or a bad thing depending on your preferences.

It makes 24 ice cubes per batch but time per batch is adjustable – the longer you set it the bigger the ice cubes will be and vice versa. Default setting is 15 minutes to make a single batch.

Ice cube quality is good. They are tasteless, dense and will be crystal clear if you use distilled water (most ice makers, especially those who make bullet shaped ice cubes usually don’t produce fully transparent ice even with distilled water). Only flaw is that all of the 24 cubes tend to come out as a single sheet. They are very easy to break apart though.

Just like with all the other ice makers than cost less than $300 ice basket of Frigidaire EFIC452-SSBLACK XL is not refrigerated so made ice cubes will slowly melt if left there.

Control panel

Control panel of Frigidaire EFIC452-SSBLACK XL features 4 buttons and LCD display that shows multitude of information like temperature, selected ice cube size setting, multiple warnings for when ice basket is full or water reservoir empty and so on.

Two of the buttons are for adjusting batch production time or timer. Another one is for setting up timer. The last button simply turns the ice maker on or off.

Frigidaire EFIC452-SSBLACK XL has a timer feature which is not a common one for ice makers of this price. You can set after what time period it should start automatically making ice or when to stop it.

It also has sensors to detect when water reservoir is empty or ice basket full. This is a vital feature to pause ice production when it’s necessary so pretty much all ice makers have it. Sometimes sensor that detect that ice basket is full can malfunction and fail to detect that it’s full – this won’t cause any damage to the ice maker but can cause thick slab of ice ends up getting stuck in freezing tray. Water reservoir sensor works like it’s supposed to which is far more important since if it would fail it could potentially damage the ice maker.

Water reservoir capacity is 2.3 liters (77.7 oz) and ice basket can hold up to 2.4 pounds of ice cubes (1.1 kg).

Frigidaire EFIC452-SSBLACK XL ice maker machine measures 11.3 inches wide, 14.06 inches deep and 14.76 inches high.

Even though Frigidaire EFIC452-SSBLACK XL is not perfect it’s one of the best ice makers you can buy without spending hundreds of dollars. It has some small minor flaws but overall it’s a great appliance.

  • Ice cubes per batch: 24

#2 Frigidaire EFIC235-AMZ

Frigidaire EFIC235-AMZ is more expensive than other countertop ice makers but that’s because it’s a special one. You see it doesn’t make regular ice, it makes nugget ice (also known as pellet, pebble or sonic ice) which is incredibly satisfying to chew on.

Until recently you had to spend thousands of dollars to buy an ice maker that can make nugget ice. That changed when GE Profile released their Opal Nugget Ice Maker (previously known as FirstBuild Opal) – the first somewhat affordable nugget ice maker. It was the only such kind of appliance that didn’t cost thousands until few months ago when Frigidaire likely inspired by GE Profile Opal’s success followed the example and released EFIC235-AMZ which is even more affordable.

So what makes nugget ice so special? It’s not simply a solid ice, instead it’s flaked ice compressed into small nuggets, hence the name nugget ice. It has air pockets which will fill up with liquid when you put them into a drink making it absorb the flavor and cool it down better due to significantly increased contact area between liquid and ice.

The main reason nugget ice has massive following is because it’s incredibly satisfying to chew one. Air pockets gives it soft, airy and crunchy texture. It’s hard to explain if you have never tried it but it’s like chewing on a cloud from heaven.

Ice production

Frigidaire EFIC235-AMZ can make up to 44 lbs of nugget ice in 24 hours whereas GE Profile Opal only 24 lbs. The difference in quality of ice made by them is not large but GE Profile Opal seems to make slightly better nugget ice.

Frigidaire EFIC235-AMZ makes a batch of nugget ice every 15 minutes which is about 0.45 lbs of nugget ice per batch. For optimal performance air temperature should be in range from 50°F to 104°F (10°C to 40°C).

Control panel

Frigidaire EFIC235-AMZ has 4 buttons (“Start/Stop” ice making, “Start cleaning mode”, “Turn on/off UV light” and “turn on/off interior light”) and 4 indicator lights (“Add water” illuminates when water reservoir is empty, “Power” indicator illuminates when ice maker is turned one, “UV” indicator illuminates when UV light that kills bacteria is turned on and “Ice full” indicator illuminates when ice basket is full).

Frigidaire EFIC235-AMZ has a feature you likely haven’t seen on any other ice maker – it has UV-light sterilization mode that kills bacteria and viruses inside the ice maker.

Just like other ice makers it also has sensors that detect when water reservoir is empty or ice basket full.

Ice basket can hold up to 3 lbs of nugget ice – same as GE Profile Opal.

EFIC235-AMZ is the best Frigidaire ice maker. It makes the best ice which is nugget ice but it’s more expensive than other models so most won’t buy it and for that reason you could argue it doesn’t offer best value for money which is why it’s ranked #2.

Frigidaire EFIC235-AMZ Nugget Ice Maker Specs:

  • Type: Freestanding / Portable / Countertop
  • Voltage: 115V
  • Ice output: up to 44 lbs per 24 hours
  • Type of ice: Nugget / Pellet / Pebble / Chewable / Sonic

#3 Frigidaire EFIC117 Portable Countertop Ice Machine

Frigidaire EFIC117 can make up to 26 lbs of ice cubes in 24 hours. It makes 9 bullet shaped ice cubes with hollow middle per batch. Each batch takes 6-11 minutes to be made depending on selected ice cube size as well water and air temperatures.

Ice quality is decent but be aware that first couple batch might be of lower quality since Frigidaire EFIC117 needs to run for a bit to cool down for optimal performance.

There are two ice cube size settings: small and large. Difference between them is small and even the large ice cubes are rather small.

Ice basket

As you might expect by now ice basket is not refrigerated. It can hold up to 1.5 lbs of ice cubes, at least according to manufacturer. It seems like sensor detects that ice basket is full and pauses production when there’s about 1 pound of ice cubes there.

Control panel

Frigidaire EFIC117 only has 2 buttons: one for turning ice maker on/off and the other for selecting ice cube size.

It also has 5 indicator lights:

  • “Add water” indicator: Illuminates if water reservoir is empty. Pour water in it to resume ice cube production.
  • “Ice full” indicator: Illuminates if ice basket is full. Take out ice cubes to resume ice cube production.
  • “Power” indicator: Illuminates when ice maker is turned on.
  • “S” indicator: Illuminates when small ice cube size setting has been set.
  • “L’’ indicator: Illuminates when large ice cube size setting has been set.

Frigidaire EFIC117 doesn’t have any special features you wouldn’t find on most other portable ice makers. It does have sensors that detect when water reservoir is empty or ice basket full of ice cubes. It also has transparent window so you can see contents of ice basket without opening it and letting warm air inside which could impact quality of next 1-2 batches in a negative way.

Frigidaire EFIC117 is a decent ice maker if you don’t want to spend a lot of money.

#4 Frigidaire EFIC103

Frigidaire EFIC103 portable ice maker machine can make up to 26 pounds of ice cubes in a day. It makes a batch of 9 ice cubes (bullet shaped with hollow inside) every 6-10 minutes. First batch can also take longer to make since EFIC103 needs some time to cool down for optimal performance.

Ice cube quality depends on temperature of water. Cool water will produce bigger and denser ice cubes than warm.

Control panel of Frigidaire EFIC103 is very similar to EFIC117. It has 2 buttons and 6 indicators all with same functionality with only difference being that EFIC103 offers 3 different ice cube size settings instead of 2. One of the buttons is for turning device on or off and the other for choosing ice cube size. Two of the indicators are warning indicators to warn you when ice basket is full or water reservoir empty. Three more are for displaying which ice cube size setting you have selected – each setting has its own indicator light. The last, sixth indicator, illuminates that ice maker is turned on.

Frigidaire EFIC103 features drain plug, transparent window on lid as well sensors that will detect and pause ice production if ice basket is full or water reservoir empty. Ice basket holds up to 2.2 lbs of ice cubes.

Reliability is why Frigidaire EFIC103 ranks below EFIC117. According to consumer reports it seems it’s somewhat common for EFIC103 break after more or less 12 months of use. There are also reports about it lasting for 2+ years but according to consumer reports EFIC103 seems to be less reliable than Frigidaire ice makers ranked above it.

Frigidaire EFIC103 is not a bad ice maker when it works but since it seems it’s somewhat common for it to break after ~1 year of use it’s likely not the one you should get.

Frigidaire EFIC103 Ice Machine Specs/Details:

  • Type: Freestanding / Portable / Countertop
  • Ice output: up to 26 lbs per 24 hours
  • Ice cubes per batch: 9
  • Time per batch: 6-17 minutes
  • Ice cube size options: 3
  • Ice basket capacity: 2.2 lbs
  • Housing material: Stainless steel
  • Dimensions (approximate): 14.44” x 11.69” x 14.88” (D x W x H)

#5 Frigidaire EFIC227 2-in-1 Ice Maker/Water Dispenser

Frigidaire EFIC227 doesn’t only make ice cubes but also dispenses water making it unique among other Frigidaire ice machines.

Just like most it’s capable of making up to 26 pounds of ice cubes in 24 hours, at least that’s what manufacturer claims since it definitely doesn’t output as much ice as other “up to 26lbs/24h” ice makers.

It makes 9 ice cubes every 7-15 minutes. One of the insufficiencies is that it only hold enough ice for 1-2 cups whereas other ice makers usually hold around 2 pounds.

It’s also loud.

Control panel

Control panel features LCD display that shows all kind of stuff as well 5 buttons: “On/Off”, “Timer”, “Select”, “Ice” and “Water”.

Frigidaire EFIC227 is the worst appliance from the manufacturer for making ice and by far. Overall it’s mediocre at best and can be finicky at times which is why it’s very hard to recommend it to someone.
