Baratza Sette 30 Conical Burr Grinder Review
Baratza Sette 30 is a relatively inexpensive burr grinder suited for espresso. It’s equipped with 40mm hardened steel conical burrs and has 31 grind fineness settings. How does it fare against competition and can it grind well enough for amazing cup of espresso?
Grinding
Baratza Sette 30 can grind extremely fine which burr grinders at this price point often struggle with. It also produces very uniform grind making it near perfect grinder for those who drink espresso. Baratza Sette 30 also grinds fast (3.5 to 5.5 grams per second) and doesn’t leave a lot of residue. Grinding performance is really impressive for the money.
There are two downsides though. First one is that it’s pretty loud, louder than typically burr grinders are (which are already typically quite loud).
Second downside is that it doesn’t grind coarse enough for other coffee types. It’s amazing for espresso but even on coarsest settings it still grinds relatively fine. It might do for pour over or drip coffees but it won’t be optimal. It definitely can’t grind coarse enough for something like french press.
Quality
Materials do feel a bit cheap but you can live with it especially since grinding performance is comparable to that of grinders that cost 4 times as much.
Bean hopper and grounds bin
Bean hopper capacity is 10 oz (300 to 400 grams) whereas grounds bin capacity is 5.5 oz (160 grams). Grounds bin is made of “anti-static plastic” (according to manufacturer) but there is still a bit of static there (matters on beans you use).
Controls
Baratza Sette 30 has a simple grind adjustment dial, an LCD display and 4 buttons: “Stop”, “Start/Pause” and two more for adjusting grind time (in 0.1 second increments). Very simple and intuitive.
Features
Baratza Sette 30 has adjustable “arms” that allow you to either grind directly into portafilter or into the grounds bin.
It’s certified by CB, ETL and cETL as well complies with UL, CSA, CE and EK safety standards.
Size and weight
Baratza Sette 30 conical burr grinder weighs 7 pounds and measures 5.2 inches wide by 9.5 inches deep by 15.75 inches tall (13 cm x 24 cm x 40 cm).
Conclusions
Baratza Sette 30 is arguably the best burr grinder for espresso at this price point. It’s not a do-it-all unit like Breville BCG820BSS Smart Pro but Breville can’t grind for espresso as well as Baratza.
