Baratza Sette 270 Conical Burr Coffee Grinder Review

Baratza Sette 270 is a medium priced conical burr coffee grinder designed for medium to fine grind brews like pour over and espresso. Other Baratza burr grinders have left good impressions so far, will this be the case for Sette 270 as well?

Grinding

Baratza Sette 270 is equipped with 40 mm Etzinger steel burrs and has 31 macro and 9 micro adjustments which offers more than enough adjustability.

Grind quality is exceptional for the money. Grind is very consistent even at coarsest settings which is not something you can say about many other burr grinders. There’s also essentially zero retention so you don’t waste any grounds or have to worry about them being stale. Grinds very fast as well – up to 5.5 grams per second.

Just as expected Baratza Sette 270 delivers on the promise to grind amazingly well for medium to fine brews like pour over, drip, aeropress, moka pot, V60, espresso (both pressurized and unpressurized portafilter) and Turkish. It does not grind coarse enough for French Press or Cold Brew though so if you drink either of those then having only this burr grinder won’t cut it.

If you have to criticize Baratza Sette 270 for something it’s the noise – it’s pretty loud. All burr grinders are more or less loud but Sette 270 isn’t among the quietest ones.

Controls

Baratza Sette 270 burr grinder is equipped with LCD display and 7 buttons. Three of them are programmable presets and the rest of them are “Stop”, “Start/Pause”, “Up” and “Down” (the latter two for adjusting grind time). You can manually grind by holding “Start/Pause” button if you want to.

Grinding time can can be adjusted in 0.1 second increments. Grind coarseness macro and micro settings are adjusted with separate dials located under the control panel. Simple and intuitive.

Features

Baratza Sette 270 has adjustable holder arms so you can grind directly into portafilter (49mm to 58mm) as well most coffee drippers and filters (V60, Clever, Able Kone and others).

Other features include bean shutoff knob and grounds bin made of anti-static plastic (it could have been made of glass at this price).

Bean hopper holds 10 oz (300-400 grams) of coffee beans whereas grounds bin is large enough to accommodate 5.5 oz (160 grams) of grounds coffee.

Baratza Sette 270 is UL, CSA, CE and EK certified.

Conclusions

Overall Baratza Sette 270 is exceptional burr grinder for medium to fine grinds. Like anything in this world it’s not absolutely perfect but it gets pretty close to it.
